We'll Punish Any Akwa Poly Lecturer Receiving Money For Grades - Rector

...Says institution has zero tolerance for cultism

The Management of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osura, Ikot Ekpene LGA, has vowed that any staff of the school caught indulging in any demeaning act would be published appropriately.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Moses Umobong in a chat with newsmen on Wednesday at the Conference Hall of the institution, called on students to open up on lecturers receiving payments for grades.

"I have told the students, if any lecturer demands for money for 'sorting', let the management know. I am not supretending over corrupt practices at AkwaPoly. It is very difficult to sort out a particular lecturer that collects 'sorting' for marks. We need evidence to deal with one person, and the rest will take correction", added.

He denied allegations of hike in tuition fees for the institution, saying fees payable by students running various programmes in the school, have not been increased as alleged.

He also carpeted claims of misappropriation of funds meant for developmental projects in the school, explaining that funds released to the school go through the Ministry of Education, not individual management staff.

"Akwa Poly has not increased its tuition fees from what it was. Students pay fees only to designated accounts. We operate through Remita, so if you go to Remita, you'd see the fees paid by each student.

"The rumour that I have diverted funds released by the state government for infrastructural development in the institutions is completely false and an attempt to mislead the public. If the state government is to release funds to Akwa Poly, it does not release to the school. It goes through the Ministry of Education", he said.

Speaking further, the Rector said the institution had a zero tolerance for cultism, adding he would continue to uphold its dignity as a centre of academic excellence.

"We have zero tolerance for cultism. It will be difficult for you to hear that students are rioting. I'll do everything within my powers to uphold AkwaPoly. We're doing everything within our ability to make sure the institution is what it should be. My relationship with the students is cordial, that is why we have not recorded any form of protest since I resumed as Rector of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic", he said.

Highpoint of the chat was an on-the-spot assessment of some projects in the institution executed under the current Rector.
